Hey guys, I'm currently working on a shooter game with flashMX and I was thinking about the game over screen's background.. I made a few final versions in photoshop but I don't know which one looks better, help me decide.

Thanks. I decided to use the first one. with some old film like effects in flash using the 3rd image as a masked layer. Its looking cool now, I'll be sure to show off the game when I'm done with the whole project in a few months.

Yeah basically it will be a mindless shooting game with zombie/demon things to kill. No storyline and excessive blood and gore. 3 different weapons, and about 3 or 4 big levels. Im almost done with the first level, and Im thinking of Ideas for the first boss fight. The first level takes place in a graveyard. I decided to name the game "ArchFiend" on account it sounds cool to me. I'll post some early screen shots when I get home from work.

Here are some early screenshots of the first level. So far there are zombies that just stand there and let you kill them and ones that shoot at you until you die.

The screenshots show 2 of the 3 weapons in the game and some nice gore.

Well.... I've played around with flash for a few years and know about animating, but until recently I had no clue how to use actionscript and didnt bother learning it. Now that I am able to do some basic programing (loops, variables, functions, arrays) I can actually make a game that works with my animating skills. I'm pretty excited for it when its done.

I know Flashkit.com has some okay tutorials, but they don't really explain too much, so you probably won't learn a whole lot. but its a good start.

Macromedia's Online Documentation really helped me a lot. If you need to understand what a certain operand or function does you can look it up.

But most of all I think my understanding of how gerneral programming works and flows. Actionscript is a lot like JavaScript. And PHP works similar too.

I can't recomend the perfect way to learn it, my way has been a struggle, but one day it just clicked and I was like "Whoa, I bet I can program with flash now"

well, Macromedia Docs are as good as W3C.org for HTML. yes, its a reference, but in no way it is a tutorial. maybe you know a site where easily and humorously (as in HTMLSource) you can learn that?

oh, but i see, you know already JavaScript and PHP and all. hah, well, no wonder you learnt Actionscript easily. heh tongue.gif

Yeah they do look a bit cartoonish. I can't really help it, thats just my drawing style.

Anyway I am done with the first level, and I am looking at the size of the .fla which is over 2MB allready, Im compressing and optomizing as much as I know how to (Isnt doing much I'm still a newbie to flash games).

.....So I think I am going to make each level on a seperate file then use passwords. Probably be a download only game.

umm, 2 megs is big blink.gif big games are only like 3-4 megs

look in Flash tutorials, what reduces the size. you havent been adoing any per-frame animation, have you? tongue.gif

The first graphic looks the best, but everyone else told you that already. I definitely want to try this game when you're done.

Optimizing your graphics in ImageReady, would probably go a long way towards reducing file size.

Good idea, but I have Fireworks MX, it does a good optomising job.
I wonder if I just convert my bitmaps to vector if it would help or just make it larger, I want too keep the detail in the backgrounds. I have compressed the music and sound(for the music I use small loops instead of large unedited songs), but a little more wouldnt hurt.

Im looking at how to load different .swf files into a movie, I think I'll use that for loading in different levels.

I have been sick, and busy at work..so I havent got started on the second level. I'm still thinking of what it will be like. I decided it will be like a forest kind of level, and I'm not sure on what kind of enemies. ghosts maybe? I don't know. I want to have several kinds enemies for this level, and then I have to think of an idea for another boss fight. Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm going to get busy on my level model now with Bryce5.
oh and here is a screen shot of the first boss fight.

No let me explane.
You've played some FPS shooters in flash right? Well most of them use a static background, enemies pop up, you kill them and then the background changes to another image to show that you have moved your position, some even use some animation to move. My game is like the first example with static background images.

So what I do is make a 3d level in Bryce5 set up a camera where I want the level to start, then I make a new animation frame and move the camera to the next view point (this wont be a smooth animation because that would take way to long and be unnecessary). so I end up with a choppy animating camera that goes through the level. then I just export/render the animation to an image sequence, instead of a movie file. then I can use photoshop to run a batch prosscess to crop off the area that the HUD takes up.

I import the images into flash for my game, its simple and I dont have to draw 3d looking backgrounds.
