So the ipad is out in the UK now and I got to play with one today. What can I say about it, it's basically a large iphone. But you already knew that!

It is of course much slicker/faster and that lovely big screen is so crisp and clear. Using google maps on it was amazing to be honest and so was the internet. I can see it being incredibly useful for many things and it's pickup/putdown design makes it that little bit special.

If i had the money, i'd totally buy one. But it really is a luxury item for me rather than a need, so I won't.

I'm not sure about this. Sure it's nice, but this can hardly be useful. It just doesn't have the functionality of a classic notebook, and it lacks the portability advantage of an internet phone (iPhone...) Plus, it's like super expensive.

Well it's true that it's not as portable as an iphone. But it's not meant to in competition with that. It's in competition with netbooks. Portablity wise, it's better than those. Lighter and instant on of course.

I think for all the things you are going to do on a netbook, it has all you need. But hey, if someone does an android version at half the price, it'll be better. praise.gif

And it has it's own youtube app which actually de-clutters the youtube experience.

Oh please. The Ipad (stupid name) is a luxury product build specifically to look smart and to be waved around. It's useless, big, no physical keyboard, no usb ports. And most of all: it's an Apple product. I'd rather buy a netbook and something like a HTC Desire then this thing.

I think calling it useless is unfair. It really has got some practical applications. I would say it may not be suited for home use, but more for business, schools or any other situation where a large screened device needs to be carried around. I've already seen presenters using it on TV as interactive clipboards.

In fact, that's probably the best description for it.

So people buy an interactive clipboard for a few hundred dollars. Seems expensive to me. tongue.gif
But tablet pc's are being used a long time now in some professions. Just not by the general public.

What bums me about the iPad is the new restriction to 2GB of data a month. Using the iPad for it's purpose (media) will take way more than that.

Yeah that's true. You'd really have to restrict use away from wifi zones. I nearly went through my monthly usage just via mobile internet on Three.

I love it how companies give "unlimited" internet (it's 500mb a month, read the fair use policy) which means you can download as much as you want (no really! 500mb. we call it fair use). I'm so glad i went with Three and their amazing unlimitedness (500mb a month). thumbdown.gif

I mostly agree with Remco. My prejudices aside, it looks cool, sure, but personally for serious use I'd get a netvertible. If we're going to stick with tablets, at least something that has a normal OS where I can install the things I want.

Frankly the connectivity sort of sucks just about everywhere I've been. I mean, if you're supposed to use in constantly, then mobile internet is just too slow.

Have fun with your iPad. I'd never buy it though, don't really like the idea of a company telling me which applications I can use and which I can't. If I pay such an amount of money for something I expect it to be my own meaning I can do whatever the frack I want with it.

My roommate bought an iPad. I have never seen him use it when a real computer wasn't conveniently available. The kicker was when, riding on a train, he put his iPad away and pulled out...a laptop. I lol'd.

Me and my mate went into starbucks at lunch today. My mate had an ipad with him and was playing around with it. I swear there were about a dozen people who said 'ooo. ipad' as they spotted it. It's certainly attracting peoples attentions. Just shows you want the right kind of publicity can do.

Yea, publicity indeed. I saw a facebook conversation on failbook recently, from someone who was incredibly poor, but still planning to get an iPhone once she got some extra social support. Sad. And I see a lot of people with iPhones everywhere, even like really young people and such... That thing is very expensive in Belgium, it's so stupid that all these people buy it just because it's *cool*.

And I read that 3 million iPads already sold? Woah.

I liked Apple a lot more back when they weren't a fashion accessory yet.

I don't even remember them before they became a fashion accessory (only those weird half-egg desktop computers that I'd sometimes see in shops). I mean, they really got the cash flowing with the release of the iPod, and what is that if not a fashion accessory?

It's kind of funny to see the tons of people . At our institute, literally, the student and the prof talk about an appointment, then get out their iPhones and start checking their schedule for next week. I find these situations really quite amusing. tongue.gif

Yeah they basically become 'known' with the ipod and alot of it was probably down to a very slick and appealing campaign to advertise to hip audience. They MADE it the fashion accessory that everyone should get to be cool. Made it pricier than the average MP3 player so that it became a desirable luxury item that meant if you could get it, you'd be the envy of your friends.

It was an incredibly clever and successful campaign and I think apple deserve credit where credit is due for that.

Well, Apple doesn't make crap products, they are (based on own experience) less laggy than many others. They work as intended, and that part is great. The less great part, is what they intended.

I have to admit, after using my android phone as an mp3 player for a while, i've gone back to my iphone for that. Just seems to work a little bit better in the music department.

It makes a difference when you're doing 80 down the motorway and trying to find your favourite track. yes.gif

You shouldn't be looking for your favorite tracks while driving. nono.gif

Why would you never consider the iPhone or iPad but think the iPod is great? It's way overpriced for what you get. I used a friends iPod for a while and I really found no reason to justify the additional 100 to the price tag compared to my Cowon D2. (at the time I bought mine)

The only thing it has that my D2 doesn't is the appstore which I think is completely retarded.
