PS3 controller battery not replaceable

QUOTE

As the specs have drifted out for the PS3, there have been more than a few times where we have shaken our heads. Several of them were followed by exasperated cries of "What were they THINKING?!" Some things were just so simple and yet didn't get done - little oversights that trip up what could be a grand piece of hardware. Well, add another "whoops" to the list - the battery in the controller isn't replaceable.

Does this sound like a silly complaint? Well, we can take a trip through Sony's recent run of battery production to find out if this is an issue - better wear your flame-retardant outfits, though. But even if we leave out the random acts of spontaneous combustion, batteries do just wear out over time. In other systems using wireless controllers, you can just plug in some AA batteries, or a new rechargeable pack (in the case of the XBox 360 you get either option).

For the PS3, if the battery in your controller fails for any reason, you're left with one of two options. If the PS3 is still under warranty, you can send the controller back for 'repairs.' Otherwise, you'll be out to the store to buy a new one. In order to stick with the PS2 controller's look and feel, Sony has sealed its rechargeable battery in the casing - there is no good way to get it out and make a switch.

Of course, switching batteries out won't help much if the controller just catches fire in your hand...

Sony was going down ever since they announced details of the PS3. They completely screwed up this one. They think the sucess of PS2 will guarantee an even bigger sucess for the PS3 no matter how many flaws they leave in the console.

They didn't make the battery replaceable for a reason. And that reason is if(read:when) your battery dies you'll have to buy a new controller and they think no one will notice why they designed the controller that way. One thing's for sure though: they WILL be able to sell the first bunch of PS3's at launch becouse PS2 was a big sucess, thus casual gamers automaticly think PS3 pwns any other console - of course 90% of casual gamers have a very limited knowledge to back up their opinions, but eventually everyone will realise the flaws of this system. Then there are the Sony fanboys - if theres still any left. As a member of xbox360forum.com we get sony fanboys who say "screw PS3 sony sux, 360 FTW" every week. These groups will surely make short work of the first bunch of PS3's, but then the sales will surely go down. I'm starting to feel sorry about sony.

the ps3 could have been legendary for being perfect. now it'll be notorious for having so many weird things wrong with it.

and yeah, is it really that hard to make it so it's replaceable? it seems like it'll take more effort to make it not replaceable. the games look great, but what good is it if you worry about your controller battery?

wii ftw.

Most of the PS3 games have/nearly reached the 25gb limit on their Blu-ray disk, we will be soon getting 50gb games!

That's total bullsh*t. Even goddamn Oblivion fits on a 9GB DVD rolleyes.gif

EDIT:
According to GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony representative told the site that the electronics giant "will provide a service to replace wireless PS3 controllers 'when and if' their lithium batteries degrade." The representative added that it would be many years before the batteries degraded. There was no indication as to how much--if anything--Sony would charge for the service.

Yes and have you noticed the perfomance of TES4 on X360...

Although already reaching 25GB is probably exaggerated games like MGS4 are far past the DVD size already.
