I guess most of you won't know me anymore, as I have been away for ages, so maybe I should introduce myself again biggrin.gif

As you can see by my member n, I am kind of a forum relic, and in fact have never been active since the move from VCU to g-unleashed. Those who know me, probably remember me from my little game "Guess the car" on the VCU-forums - oh those good ol' times smile.gif

I won't make promises that I'll become very active here though... however, I'll try to check this place every now and then, and post a bit more (like once a month opposed to once a year biggrin.gif)

Hey, you think yours is long?
TRY AND BEAT THIS!
Ikarus 293. This was the only prototype. We sold it to Teheran as it was too long for us. Though it was manufactured under license in Cuba for a while, it was called Giron there.

IPB Image

The Belgian company Van Hool makes similar, double articulated busses wink.gif
I visited Van Hool 2 years ago, and I must say, it was a very interesting tour. Unfortunately, it was forbidden to take pictures in the factory. They make both coaches and city busses, of which the latter ones have a "low floor" design, the motor is mounted vertically, so the floor is completely flat, even towards the rear.

Their busses can be found around the world, when I was at their factory, there was a shipment of 14 coaches being prepared for shipment to the USA, for Greyhound. There were also some busses being prepared for Algeria. Because these busses would be operated in a very sandy environment, their ventilation inlets were all equipped with filters, and mounted higher up.

In fact this one is true;
When I had a layover at the Kopenhagen Kastrup airport, I saw my bags being loaded on the flight to London Heathrow instead of my flight to Brussels. biggrin.gif

 Here's my opinion about this:

- That weapons system is way better then post counts, keep it happy.gif
- A respect rating would be great, but it has to be worked out perfectly
two little suggestions about how to work this out:
  • Work with a respected users list, the more users who respect you, the higher your respect rating (RR) is. If a very respected user puts you on his respected users list, your respect rating rises more then if someone with a RR of 0 adds you to his/her list.
  • Also work with a respect rating, but give points to posts, if a user posts a very interesting post, he can get a higher RR. The mods award the points.
- Personally I don't like this skin either... I think it's too dark, and it looks really messy in my browser (Opera). I prefered the VCU skin, much lighter and less cluttered. (some tips to make it better: lighter colours, no shades, thin dividers (1-2px thick)) A skin can be very important, I can't help it, but I feel less tempted to visit this forum since the skin changed.

You know what, let us all dig a big hole in the ground, and construct a bomb-proof wall of 5 meters around it. So that we're safe from terrorism...

If the first thing going through your mind when you see a tall building is a plane crashing into it or a bomb exploding in it, then you're sick wacko.gif

The main target for terrorists is creating paranoia, and its sad to see that they succeeded in that, if I see this forum no.gif

It was only a matter of time 'till they got the highest... and they're working on some other big projects; they're currently building a big isle shaped like a palm tree, and there are plans (or even are currently building it too - don't know for sure) to build another isle shaped like a world map...

It may look like a complete waste of money, but in fact it isn't that stupid.... they're heavily promoting Dubai as a travel destination, or a stopover on the way from Europe to the far east, or even oceania, and they need to have something to attract these tourists, apart from sand tongue.gif
All this to have something to fall back on (tourism) if they lose their money from oil.

The first one is shot through the back window of a train (didn't risk my life on the rails to take it tongue.gif), and is my current background.

I like to use sepia or black and white backgrounds, because colored ones distract me too much. tongue.gif

  Giant Earthquake Strikes Southeast-asia

The biggest Tsunami in recent history occured in Alaska indeed, in "Lituya Bay" to be more exactly... it wasn't caused by a meteorite though, but by a landslide... Google learned me that it happened on July 8th, 1958.

Landslides are a big threat, as they're able to generate huge tsunamis... the next one will probably occur on the Canary Islands, on the isle of La Palma. The whole western side of the Cumbre Vieja volcano is ready to slide into the ocean. It may happen during the next eruption (which could be anytime, as it's an active volcano), or it may not happen for hundreds of years. But if it happens, it will generate a huge tsunami, which will still have a height of 50 metres or higher when it reaches the east coast of the United States... there wouldn't be very much left of cities like New York and Miami if they were hit by a 50-metre wave... it looks like the script of such a cheap Hollywood-disaster movie

If you're interested in more information about this, just Google for Cumbre Vieja, La Palma and tsunami. There's plenty of documentation about it.

This morning, I was lying in my bed, and I felt some minor bumps. I thought that it was a small earthquake, but didn't pay much attention to it. However since earthquakes are very rare in Belgium I decided to check the news... turns out that a giant earthquake (the fifth largest since 1900!) has struck Sumatra (Indonesia). I can only imagine how big that earthquake had to be for me to feel it in Europe, thousands of miles away...)

So far the death toll is 2000, but this number is expected to grow much larger, as thousands of people are said to be missing...

I hope noone on this board has been affected...
My condolences to the victims no.gif

QUOTE(Mister V @ Dec 19 2004, 01:06 )
Whats the best passenger planes now? i know Airbus is overtaking Boeing...has already. I know Airbus seems to be safer than Boing.
Or is this a dumb topic tongue.gif
*

A brand new Boeing plane is as safe as a brand new Airbus, thrust me

The fact that Boeings crash more often, is because there are just more Boeings flying around... remember that Boeing is way older then Airbus/EADS, which has only been around for 30-32 years. Another reason is that most of these crashes occur with some dubious companies, based in a third world country (like Nigeria for example). Most of these companies fly with Boeings, because they're far cheaper to acquire. (All Airbus planes are relatively new and therefore more expensive to lease, given that the oldest Airbus is "just" 30-32 years old). Most of the planes flying for such companies are ca 30-40 years old.

QUOTE(j-dawg @ Dec 19 2004, 01:30 )
Airlines keep advertising that Airbus planes are much quieter than Boeing planes, and I listened this summer when I went in an A340 (the big one). It's true, they are quieter, and apparently more fuel-efficient, but they're more expensive and slower.
*

You can't say that "an" Airbus is quieter then "a Boeing", that's the same like saying a Ford is quieter then a Saab... you have to compare the different models they sell, not the brand itself.
The A340 is known to be a very quiet plane though, that's true ;-)
It's also very difficult to measure the sound levels, as they differ from where in the plane you measure. So a Boeing 717 will be veeeery quiet in the front of the plane, as the engines are mounted on the rear of the plane. If you sit in the back of the plane, it will be waaaay noisier though....

And Airbusses aren't more expensive then their Boeing-counterparts, most of the time, they're even cheaper... so a 777 is known to be generally more expensive then an A340. Airbusses aren't slower too, the fastest "regular" airliner is a Boeing 747, but all the other Boeings and Airbusses fly at +/- the same speed.

QUOTE(Vin @ Dec 19 2004, 18:22 )
air bus a340 will be used for busy flight paths only. like london to ny blah blah...
so its kinda pointless to make such a huge plane. they will be expensive to maintain and those expenses will be covered only if there are enough passengers.

and just imagine. what if one of them crashes...into a building . crazy.gif
*

As Mister V mentioned, you're talking about the A380, a full-length double-deck plane, and not the A340.
The A380 is nearly finished, the roll-out ceremony is planned for mid-january, and the first flight will be at the end of march. It's planned to come in revenue service in the first half of 2006.
Click here to see some pics of the A380

QUOTE(Mister V @ Dec 19 2004, 20:06 )
Vin, hes talking about the A340...NOT the double-cecker A380, they dont do commercial flying yet! And of the A380 there are already about 70 ordered, coz its got z huge capacity and huge range and also more efficiency than a jumbo-jet
True, true, the statistics show that, but if a plane crashes - your chance of survival is 1/1000000000000 crazy.gif

BTW if you dont know, theres a person in the world (OMFG thats what i call lucky!) who fell 10 km from a crashing plane up in the sky, fell on some trees and in deep snow and got a mere bruise!!! shocking.gif i would like to be a person with THAT much luck!!!
*

There are already 129 A380's ordered, and Airbus is hoping to have 150 orders at the Paris Airshow in june 2005. Personally I expect them to reach 150 orders by february-march, and 160-170 by the Paris Airshow. This is quite a good order book, especially if you consider that the plane hasn't even flown yet...

btw, it is a misconception that most of the crashes aren't surviveable, most airliner crashes are surviveable, as most of the time, a "crash" is just a plane skidding of the runway, a gear collapse or something similar. Of course there are a few "big" crashes, but they are very, very rare....

And it's true indeed, that a man fell ca 10km and survived it... it happened at the end of WWII. (it was a fighter plane and it was shot down). There's also a flight attendant who survived an airliner crash (I think it was a Boeing 727) and fell from an altitude of ca 10km. (she was in the back of the plane, and survived somehow). This happened somewhere in the sixties or seventies I think...

QUOTE(Vin @ Dec 20 2004, 06:41 )
you serious?  crazy.gif

-------

ok, when are they going to invent a vertical take off passsenger jet. like the harrier. i know there one propeller plane already but they are always like in the prototype stage.

dont you think that would be cool. i mean, it will save a whole lot of airport space. and planes wont have to wait in que for the plane in front to take off...hell they could take off from the que.
*

Heheh, this won't happen, even in the future, as there's a tendency for more fuel-efficient, quiet planes, and a vertical take-off isn't really fuel efficient and quiet... I once heard a Harrier hovering, and I think that was one of the noisiest things I ever heard...

Greetings,

It looks fine in Opera too happy.gif

I have the same problem all the time... if I build a webpage, it looks different in IE then it looks in all the other browsers... I think the main reason for this is that Internet Explorer forgives a lot of errors in your coding... for example, if you don't close a tag, it's possible that IE will display the page just fine, which, for obvious reasons, is NOT a good thing.

Nice lay-out btw clap.gif
