After seeing this story I become overjoyed as it may have finally solved the annoying Rockford Fosgate crowd's annoying annoyingness. Now I may be able to drive to the pizza shack without having to sit at a red light behind some asshole who likes Jay-Z a little too damn much. Now this audiophile can destroy his hearing all by himself and nobody else has know. clap.gif

Soundless Sound System

Yes. Any sustained sound at high decibles will cause eventual hearing loss. Just as any sudden sound at dangerous levels will cause momentary or permenant deafness.

I don't think invention has solved these problems or is a new source of consequence-free sound. It just means that the only people who will know their hearing is being degraded are those who are listening to the device. Knowing this it might encourage the listenter to turn it down and postpone much of their otherwise immenant eventual hearing loss IMO.

Yeah-yeah, and for that to work you will have to install Microsoft® TeleXPerience 1.0™ and several upgrades, including a Firewall which will always attempt to block any conversation...

From the article it appears that the device is designed for line of sight operation. However this feature is probably only intended for the hearing range of humans. I'm sure dogs, cats and other keen hearing pets will be affected by the residual noise that is inaudible by the human ear. Excatly how much, if at all, is anyones guess. The article doesn't go into that. I should hope it would be in the brochure when the unit, or any derivitive, goes to market.

I gues it won't harm our ears. It may harm something else though. Can't harm ears because the organ isn't made to receive such things, so something else is acting. I wonder what organ is taking place. Is the information almost directly fed to the brain, bypassing the ear-drum?

It is sound that is being used here I believe. However instead of it bieng a pressue wave that spreads out so everyone can hear it, it is a focused column of sound that can only be heard by those it is aimed at. Many of the same principals are employed in sound cannon crowd control devices.

Aha, I see.
So our eardrums will still be acting?
But that sort of vibration would cause them to break, if used a lot.

In a sense yes. It would be the same effect as if you were to hold an inflated baloon in you hand while standing in a room, or an adjacent room, while the radio is playing. You will feel vibrations in the ballon as it passes into your hand. The surface of the baloon vibrates via its phsyical properties when the pressure wave hits it. A human skull will do the same thing but obviously not effectivly enough with the typical pattern of a spreading sound/pressure wave. The device aplifies the effect by focusing the wave in a concentrated column. this produces the "hearing it in your head" effect. So instead of just relying on the human ear as the receptor the entire skull is being utilized. Kind of like the baloon. Except the sound only focuses on one point instead of all points..

Of course this is what I'm getting from the article. I may not be understanding it correctly and I could be just talking shit.gif. But as far as I know this is what it's trying to say.

Mister V - Any sound producing device is potentially dangerous if the volume is too high. I don't think a "safe" sound device exists that produces high levels of volume. I doubt there ever will be. It all boils down to the properties of sound. The term "volume" is used as it's system of measurement. That's because like water it travels in waves which carry frequencies. Sound is a wave of energy travelling as a wave of force through air, water or even solid materials. It is essential pushed matter whose total taken up space is reffered to as it's "volume." In this case air. If enough voulme of air, water etc. pushes on the ear drum in a high enough density it will burst. The same could be said of a focused frequency, a la sound, as it hits the ear drum. A focused wave of sound has a higher density relative to it's volume than the same volume of standing air. That is becasue it is compressed and standing air is not.

Too much "volume" will damage the ear outright or degrade it gradually over time. There is no way around it that I know of. I don't see this device as any exception. Although, it could solve much of the noise pollution problems and I see this as it's biggest plus.

*whew* Lecure over. wacko.gif tongue.gif

You are saying that it uses the whole of the skull as a resonator. Then, people can get headaches from it, because of the vibrations, no matter how minuscule they may seem.

The only way of actually hearing sound in your head is bypasing the eardrums and using (manipulating, stmiulating?) directly the reseptor cells which are responsible for vibration reception, and thus receiving of sound. But that can be potentially more dangerous, because it can damage the brain itself.

Anything in any way related or near the brain is extremely dangerous. Yeah, cyborg implants are great, but who knows what will they do to your brain. It takes only a small electric pulse to make you do something you weren't meaning to.

The gist I'm getting from the article is that is the mechanism. I could be wrong. Perhaps only the eardrum is the resonator. But I don't think so. Anything that focuses compartmentalized sound waves at a certain point is not only going to create resonance in one area, but in all the area around it. That being said I'll need to see some hard data that proves it's safety. Otherwise I wouldn't invest in any product that uses this technology.

It probably helps that I'm probably twice as old as you. I've had a lot more time to absorb this info. And I've come to know better ways to teach it having been through private, public, home school and university. Normally this kind of stuff is put in textbooks by anal intellectuals that can only be followed 100% by Other anal intellectuals. It's gem in the rough when you get one written by average people in a style that everyone can get using everyday concepts and philosophies. Anal intellectuals, IMHO, don't really want to be understood, whether they realize it or not, and therefore their wiritngs reflect that. That's not so much bad as it is counterproductive. Instead of firing off a barrage of terms and definitions at the reader it might help if these guys had a better understanding of metaphor and analogy.

It's like a Jeff Foxworthy joke.

"If you can fully understand every texbook handed to you, You might be a Tight-Ass Intellectual." biggrin.gif

Which brings up and old Geaorge Carlin joke that illustrates the difference between book-learners and those that excel in real life 101.

"It's like playing the blues. It's not enough to know how to play the notes. You have to know why they need to be played." wink.gif

It's not their fault. There is a certain sort that can actually set aside the time and actually has the patience to write a textbook. I have enough trouble with my creative writing. To put up with so many facts and figures is mind boggling to me. I guess that's where the Anals have their niche. But I think it would really help these guys out if they took some time out to learn Why the blues need to played. And it would help everyone else out too. thumbsup.gif
