Most people who like music at all will be familiar with Living Colour's CULT OF PERSONALITY. Inmates incarcerated alongside actress and sometime singer Lindsay Lohan are experiencing this phenomenon first hand. LINK

I do agree with them. It is not fair. If you are wearing prison orange than you must be treated like everyone else unless there is special circumstance. Celebrity is not a special circumstance. I would imagine that more than a few of Lohan's fellow convicts are wondering why she is getting all this special treatment. The easy answer of course is that she is famous. But the reality is just slightly more complicated than that. You see it's not just that she's famous. And it's not just that she is a celebrity. Allow me to explain.

She is part a multi-tiered ruling class, albeit one of the lower rungs. She is part of the celebrity ruling class that has the public image and some influence but no real power. Regardless people in this lower rung are given protections from those in the higher rungs that average people do not. And for a practical reason from a certain point of view. Those in the higher rungs who do actually have power understand that even though public celebrities don't have the power they do it is nonetheless a priority to protect them from any real comeuppances. Unless of course their antics are too extreme to dismiss. It is important to them to maintain a certain amount invulnerability because if celebrities can be subjected scrutiny and accountability then the fear becomes that the lower pions will soon work their way up the ladder and all in the ruling class will become fair game. They rule by directing attention away from themselves and maintaining a culture that dictates that certain classes of people are treated differently than others. This is how they maintain control and avoid being held responsible for their actions. In order to protect themselves troublesome alcoholic actresses need to get special treatment in prison. Great lengths must be taken to preserve status.

Another facet of this tactic is to make average people fight each other. One good subject is whether or not Lindsay deserves to be in jail in the first place. As long as the fight is prescribed than there is no real threat to the ruling class. It's the principal of tribalism. It's been used forever by the ones that truly rule to distract and snooker people of differing political hues to clash with each other so they fail to elect very many politicians that aren't just puppets to one segment of the elite or the other. It's fairly easy to do to. I call it the Wimbledon Principal. There are the two opponents clashing in a match and then there are the voters which make up the audience and all the useful idiots who are the crew working the match. The audience and most of the useful idiots are convinced the only fight that is real and matters is the one being played out on the court. One or both of the players may be convinced of this too which is often the case. Subsequently the only assessments that are real or matter are the ones coming from the commentators and journalists working inside the press box. They don't care about what is going on outside the match. To them the stadium is reality. A reality created. They care not by whom or why. All they know is what has been served to them and care not to take a step outside to see what is going on or God forbid take a fresh look at what is going on inside the stadium. If they were told what is happening outside they laugh like offended idiots at the audacity of different views being put before them.

That's it in a nutshell. thumbsup.gif

I don't have much to say on the topic, what Jolly posted is kind of obvious, it all comes down to egoism. (which is completely natural and I can't see a larger society work without it).
